Baltimore Orioles Top 20 Prospects for 2011
A couple thoughts on his list:
- Johnathan Schoop seems to be ranked too high, at #7. Yes I like him a lot, too... but he's very young (19), and has only played 23 games above Rookie-ball.
- Why the heck isn't Ronnie Welty (22) on this list? He produced at a high level for the 2nd straight year (.282/.349/.464), and his 18 HR led Frederick (A+), and was the 4th highest total in the O's whole minor league system.
- #10 Wynn Pelzer was exposed, but went unselected in the Rule 5 draft... not sure what to make of that one.
- Everyone seems to have forgotten about SS Greg Miclat, who was selected in the 5th round out of Virginia in '08. But he had his first really solid pro season last year, offensively (.273/.354/.352), split between Frederick and Bowie. And his glove is what got him drafted.
- 1B Brandon Snyder struggled at AAA Norfolk last year (.256/.321/.412), but bad enough to drop him completely off the list, after being close to the top last year?
- RHP Brandon Erbe is still only 22, and should probably be here, too. Yes, he was hurt again last year, and just... bad, too (0-10, 5.73 ERA), but the live arm alone should keep him on the list. I really wish they'd just turn him into an f'ing reliever and be done with it.
- And don't forget Rick Zagone!
- Former #1 pick (2009) Matt Hobgood (#13) wll stay on prospect lists for at least another year or two, because of his draft position. But there's absolutely nothing about his stats that gives me a warm-and-fuzzy: he walks too many, doesn't strike out enough, and gave up a ton of unearned runs. Prediction: in two years, he'll be classified as a bust.
