Orioles Aggressively Chasing Bartlett?

There's a lot being said on Twitter (and more than a few blogs) about how the O's are trying hard to work a trade for Tampa shortstop Jason Bartlett; that's been a rumor for awhile now, and it makes sense - the O's need a shortstop, they'd rather not re-sign Cesar Izturis, the free agent market is weak, and the Rays would really love to start Reid Brignac next season.

Of course nothing's confirmed and there are no sources cited, but there's definitely some buzz... I've heard both Reimold and Simon mentioned as potential trade pieces.

A few notes about Bartlett:
  • He'll be 31 next season, and is arbitration-eligible.
  • Made $4,000,000 last year, and won't be a free-agent until 2012.
  • Career slash-line of .281/.345/.385, with 100 steals over 6+ seasons.
  • Was born and raised in California, but attended the University of Oklahoma.
  • He was only so-so offensively there, he hit .282/.336/.411 his junior (and final) year.
  • Drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 13th round in 2001.
  • In 2002 he got traded to the Minnesota Twins, in exchange for the immortal Brian Buchanan.
  • He produced at the minor league level; his career stat line was .299/.373/.417.
  • Made his major league debut in 2004 with the Twins.
  • Had a solid season as a part-timer in '06 (.309/.367/.393), and became a full-time starter in '07.
  • Was part of the trade that sent both Bartlett and RHP Matt Garza to Tampa Bay, in exchange for SS Brendan Harris, OF Jason Pridie, and OF Delmon Young.
  • Flourished in Tampa, including a career year in '09, when he went .320/.389/.490, with 14 HR and 30 steals. He made the AL All-Star team that year.
  • Had an off-year last season, producing a .254/.324/.350 line, which is still far above-and-beyond what the Orioles got out of Izturis, or might get out of Andino.
  • Has only been on the DL 3 times in his career, none for more than 15 days.
I wouldn't mind a deal for Bartlett at all... hope this happens somehow.
