Just heard a rumor (less than 10 minutes ago, actually) that the Orioles have completed a trade for Arizona 3B Mark Reynolds, for Kam Mickolio and David Hernandez. Here's a link to the report on ESPN, and another on SB Nation:
Sources: O's get Mark Reynolds
Mark Reynolds Trade Reported With Baltimore Orioles For Two Bullpen Arms
If this is true, this has the potential to be a very big deal for them, and I personally don't think the asking price was all that high, given the possible return... Reynolds had an awful year last year, given. And yes, he owns the major league record for most strikeouts in a season (223). But this is a guy with 40+ HR power, who over 162 games has averaged .242, 35 HR, and 100 RBI. In 2009 he had a career year, hitting .260 with 44 HR, 102 RBI, and 24 steals, with a dinger every 13.1 ABs. It's a huge upgrade over last year's cast of characters at third base, regardless.
Plus, he's signed for relatively easy money through 2012 or 2013; $5MM in 2011, $7MM in 2012, and a team option for $11MM in 2013.
More on this as it develops.
Reynolds clearly doesn't speak slugging percentage. My mom's OPS is higher.
