Report: Orioles give Konerko 'significant' offer
From the article:
"Paul Konerko, who declined to accept the White Sox's offer of salary arbitration Tuesday, reportedly has received a "significant" offer from the Baltimore Orioles. Former Reds and Nationals general manager Jim Bowden, who works for Sirius XM Radio, reported via Twitter that the Orioles were disappointed at failing to land catcher Victor Martinez -- who signed with the Tigers -- and have made a big offer to Konerko. The Orioles reportedly are targeting a number of big-name free agents."
I've talked about this year's crop of free-agent first basemen ad nauseum, but to re-iterate:
- I like Konerko (a lot), but I'm scared of his age (35 when the season starts).
- It would be excellent to obtain that kind of power and offensive potential, but he's streaky - like boom or bust season type of streaky.
- It most likely would require a 3-4 year deal to land him in this market, I think - and how many guys maintain their effectiveness thorugh age 38 or 39?
- His last deal was for 5 years, $60MM, or $12MM/year. And he's coming off of a career year... 5th in the MVP voting, and a career-high .977 OPS. We've got to be talking at least $13-$14MM/year, right?
