I've made it pretty clear here that I'm really tired of all the Hall of Fame talk, specifically when it comes to whether or not a player's career totals should be discounted because of the suspicion of steroid use. I usually have no use for it... just let me know when the votes are in, ok?
But since a former Oriole is up for induction, one I actually liked and respected (sort of like an anti-Rafael Palmeiro), I thought it was worth mentioning that Roberto Alomar will most likely be voted in this year. He missed by just 8 votes last off-season, his first on the ballot. Because he wasn't strictly a "power" hitter, he's never mentioned when the conversation turns to possible steroid users... right, like anyone using PEDs automatically hit 50 bombs the second they started using.
Actually, if you consider how fast his production went downhill after 2001, at just about the same time they started testing... and if you looked at the incident with umpire John Hirschbeck in the context of what we know about 'roid-rage... hmmm. Interesting.
See what I mean? You can disparage anyone. It's bull. Whatever... Alomar was a terrific ballplayer, and 100% deserving of The Hall.
The USA Today's Daily Pitch is doing a feature on each of the viable candidates, and has compiled a nice list of his career accomplishments. From the article:
"...After somehow missing by eight votes last year, Alomar should make it easily next week. As Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports puts last year's miss: "An embarrassment that prompted myself and others to question whether certain voters — sports editors and feature writers, in particular — should be voting at all. Difficult to imagine that he will be snubbed again."
