"The Dominican pitcher arrived at national police headquarters Monday. He was accompanied by his mother and lawyer, who gave detectives Simon's gun as part of the investigation into the killing of a 25-year-old man... Police spokesman Maximo Baez says the 29-year-old player told detectives he fired twice into the air during a celebration in the northeast coastal town of Luperon."
Here's some of the background info I've been able to gather from sites like Yahoo Sports, Hardball Talk, and the Baltimore Sun, among others:
- The incident occurred at around 4am Dominican time on Saturday morning, New Years Day.
- 25 year-old Michel Castillo was killed; 17 year-old Starlin Castillo Hernandez was shot in the arm but survived, and was hospitalized.
- Hernandez told relatives that he and his brother (Michel) were simply celebrating with friends when Simon, without provocation, opened fire on them.
- Simon denied shooting at the pair, and has told police that he fired twice "into the air".
- Simon didn't immediately make himself available to police after the shooting, and that's when the arrest warrant was issued.
- Felipe Alou Jr, who is a Dominican Rep for the Orioles, has been Simon's go-between with the Orioles and the police.
- Alou told the Associated Press that Simon has claimed that Starlin Castillo Hernandez could confirm that Simon was not the one that shot him or his brother.
- Locals told police that Simon was "known to have fired in the air before, on several occasions".
- Relatives of the victims also claimed that last year, National Police actually seized (from Simon) the gun that was used in the shooting, because Simon "had been shooting it in in the air".
- After turning himself in, Simon plead not guilty, and was supposedly going to be transferred prior to being questioned.
- One of Simon’s agents, Phil Isaac, said that Simon was speaking to the police, and he hoped there would be more clarity on Simon’s situation within the next few hours.
I have no real idea what happened, and honestly, insiders here in the US probably don't, either. What we've got is here-say and speculation, much of it gathered online from Spanish-language Dominican News sources (who also don't know much), translated to English (and probably butchered in the process), and then summarized and para-phrased, etc... to the point where the actual facts get lost in a seas of angry quotes, revisionist history, and unsubstantiated rumors. It's like a giant game of international phone tag.
One thing is for sure - Simon comes off like a reckless, irresponsible ass for being involved in something like this, and is in some major trouble here, one way or another. Even if he didn't shoot at the victims intentionally, someone died, and he fled the scene... this will probably be the last we see of him in an Orioles uniform.
