A judge in the Dominican Republic denied bail to Alfredo Simon on Tuesday; as as a result, the 29 year-old Orioles RHP may have to stay in jail for up to one year, as police investigate the charges against him (involuntary man slaughter).
For folks who didn't hear, or if you just need a refresher: Simon was involved in an accidental-death situation on News Years Eve in the Dominican. During the incident, two men were shot, one fatally. The surviving victim implicated Simon in the shooting, and he was arrested several days later.
There has been a boatload of heresay and contradictory reports coming from different sources, so about the only things we know are this:
- Simon is denying involvement, and claims that he was simplyin shooting his gun in the air, along with several other people, doing the same thing.
- Miguel Tejada has gottne involved on Simon's behalf, and is paying his legal fees.
- According to his attorneys, a preliminary ballistics report showed that it was not Simon's weapon that fired the fatal shot.
- He most likely won't be playing in an Orioles uniform anytime soon.
